The word "unique" is often overused, but when it comes to describing Gold King Mine & Ghost Town in Jerome, Arizona, it couldn’t be more fitting.
Gold King Mine & Ghost Town was the creation of Don Robertson, who started with two mines and a boarding house once used by miners. Over time, he expanded his vision by collecting historic buildings, a functioning sawmill, and an extraordinary assortment of vintage trucks, cars, and tractors. Don traveled across America to build his collection, which now exceeds 100 vehicles—though he often said he was too busy to count them all. He also constructed additional buildings, transforming this site into a truly one-of-a-kind destination with something for everyone to explore.
Although we lost the incredible Don Robertson on October 17, 2016, the site continues to evolve, offering new discoveries with each visit. Our time exploring this fascinating place was unforgettable!
On the day of our visit, the wildflowers were in full bloom, creating a stunning contrast with the rusting relics of the past. One of our favorite photographs features a 1950s REO Comet truck. The juxtaposition of the aged, weathered truck and the vibrant wildflowers caught our attention, but what stood out most was how the yellow on the truck’s grille perfectly matched the surrounding blossoms.
The abundance of wildflowers that day was breathtaking, and this 1947 Mack Fire Truck nestled in a sea of blooms is a testament to nature’s ability to reclaim the past.
Displayed outdoors, these trucks are constantly weathering, their peeling paint revealing layers of history. This slow transformation turns each vehicle into a piece of evolving art.
