Horseshoe Bend is one of the most recognized landmarks of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The area gets it's name from the horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River just 9 miles upstream from the Grand Canyon National Park boundary.
As steep walls surround the scene, it is challenging to get the entire photograph in frame. I lay on the ground and put my camera over the edge of this 1000 foot drop to fit the entire view in my photograph! I don’t like heights, but I wanted my photograph! When we arrived, the sun was very bright, making extreme contrast between the almost black cliffs and the bright sky. Then we saw clouds on the horizon. We waited a few hours, and I was able to capture the soft glowing light of this photograph.
